Alatau was granted city status in January 2024, built on the former village of Zhetygen. Its concept and master plan were developed by the Singaporean firm Surbana Jurong. The city runs along the Almaty–Konaev highway on the Western Europe – Western China corridor and lies entirely within the Alatau special economic zone. The first phase of key facilities is due by 2030, with full delivery by 2050.
The master plan splits the city into four themed districts, each with its own specialisation.
The financial and business core in the south, adjoining Almaty. By 2050: 675,000 residents and 337,000 jobs. This is also where SOM-designed Iconic Towers is going up.
Science, higher education and a medical cluster along the Almaty–Konaev highway. A branch of Korea’s KAIST — the QAIST university — is planned here.
The industrial and logistics zone on the Western Europe – Western China corridor: manufacturing, warehousing and export flows.
A tourism cluster by the Kapchagay reservoir: a year-round resort, parks and family recreation.

A 272-metre, 56-storey SOM-designed tower in Gate District: apartments, Class A offices and a five-star hotel. Delivery at the end of 2029.
Alatau lies north of Almaty, on the road towards Konaev and the Kapchagay reservoir.

Twelve Alatau infrastructure projects received KZT 31.1 billion for electricity, heating, water supply, gasification and wastewater systems.
KEPCO, Doosan and Lotte are studying Alatau projects: power grids, a 2×250 MW plant and a hotel complex with offices and apartments.
