On 31 July 2026 in Astana, the feasibility study was presented for opening a branch of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Alatau. The university will be called QAIST — the Qazaqstan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

What was presented

The KAIST team showed the results of the completed feasibility study: the concept and academic model of the future university, along with priority research directions and degree programmes. Kazakhstan’s Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Chong Ki Hong, KAIST’s leadership and Alatau City investors attended.

The project grew out of the Alatau City international road show held in Seoul in October 2025, where the ministry, KAIST and Alatau City Bank signed a memorandum on establishing a new university.

Why this matters more than energy or logistics

Of all the news about the city, this one carries the most weight for the housing market.

A university creates what no factory or warehouse does: a steady flow of young people who need somewhere to live. Students and faculty generate rental demand year-round. Campuses pull in cafés, gyms and bookshops — precisely the urban fabric whose absence leaves satellite cities as dormitory districts.

The second effect is reputational. An address next to a world-class university is valued above neighbouring blocks. That holds across property markets everywhere.

Where exactly

Golden District — the science, higher education and medical district running along the Almaty–Konaev highway. The master plan concentrates educational and medical facilities there, which is where housing will sit next to the campus.

What is still missing

A feasibility study is a justification, not an opening. No construction timeline for the campus and no date for the first intake have been announced. We will track the project’s move into construction.
